Mimi.....

Hello,
I’m Ursula; I graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 97 with a Degree in photography. I’ve been running a photography business FLUK STUDIOS in Nottingham City Centre for over five years.

In that time I’ve been lucky enough to meet and photograph some well – known personalities including Sir bob Geldof and Sir Paul Smith to name a few.

Last year I became the East Midlands photographer of the year 2007 at the Master Photographers Association Print competition. As well as being nominated over-all winner, I also won first place in three other categories - Fashion, Glamour and Avant Garde Portraiture. In November 2007 I launched Mimi Photography: my new company. Mimi has already received a Nominee Photography Award at the Nottingham Creative Business Awards 2007.

All in all last year was a pretty good year for me.

At Thirsty Thursday 21st of Feb, I’ll be giving you some insight into how hard work, determination and a love affair with long hours can eventually pay off!

I will be talking about the planning and organisation that goes into setting up a company like Mimi that will let you do what you really love doing and earn recognition from your peers, as well as how goal setting is imperative to the whole start up process.

Look out for the City life magazine review of the Mimi experience in the latest edition (Jan / Feb. 2008)

Look forward to seeing you there on Thursday - Ursula x

Jayne.. from SPEED

Hi I’m Jayne, and I work for the Hive at NTU.

I have the fancy title of SPEED Project Co-ordinator, but if you’ve been under a rock for the past twelve months you won’t know that SPEED is Student Placements for Entrepreneurs in EDucation. We help students start businesses in their placement year or alongside their studies. We’ve had some real success stories, too. Quite a few people heard about SPEED through Thirsty Thursday and are now making their dream a reality with our support. So it’s definitely worth a visit, the speakers are all young business people and it’s usually a good evening. I’m all for Social Networking online, but it should be offline in the real world too!

The real reason Harriet has asked me to contribute to this blog is that I can’t get enough of Web 2.0 (sadly) and working on the SPEED project has meant that I’ve investigated quite a few. Blogging is fun because you write something to cause a stir, and try and get people to debate it with you. Anyone can do it, yes even Muppets like Sim (Not really. Sim’s not a Muppet; he has everyone exactly where he wants them…)

Now for the ad break - check out our website www.speedproject.ac.uk, blog www.speedproject.blogspot.com, wiki www.ntuspeed.wetpaint.com

See you at Thirsty Thursday!
Jayne

Side-Kick Sim......

Hi Im Side-kick Sim co-founder of Bantum clothing I set the fashion label up with Berny BAntum a small, aggressive stealth breed of Japanese chicken...you may have seen a few of our threads rocking around nottts, most notably the "I love notts tops"...but look out for the new stuff about to drop we're more than a one trick pony....hopefully..if not please just buy our I love notts stuff:)
I will be talking at an up and coming thirsty thursday event....I Will be letting you fine folks know the twised inspiration behind the company, how I started it and how it has progressed..over the last year..most notably trade shows, supa important fashion press we have generated (good for credibility when you're a bunch of jokers) and blagging famous people to wear are garms.
You should go to Thirsty Thursday because im pretty single right now and you could possibly get the chance to drink with me...lesser reason is that the speakers, such as Eternal Spirits (big Nottingham boutique wear designer) really inspired me...and hopefully like her i might give you a little drive and the self belief that anyone really can start their own business...seriously im disorganised, if i can do it any muppet can......
Every Thirsty Thursday i have met interesting Nottingtham people who i have either ended up doing work with or having a random chat about a crazy business dream..either way its a no brainer, you dont pay, there's nice munchies, few hot bar staff and braaaaaaaaaaaaantum!

myspace.com/bantumuk and face book: berny Bantum....check out our fashion show next week Thursday 24th at Brownes from 7...oh and geat our threads at Projects...err enough free advertising..take any opportunity you can:)

see you on 21st!!!!

Laura......

Hi, I'm Laura Armstrong, I sit on the executive commitee of Nottingham Trent Students Union. I'm in charge of all societies, junction (student volunteering), RAG (fundraising) and all student training and development. The first term was really busy as we welcomed 5,000 freshers and hosted the biggest Welcome Week in the country.

I've been on the Exec for two years now and its surprizing how much I've learnt from from my everyday working life. Improving my business skills has become a large part of my job. One of the best skills I have developed is how to network and utilise this contacts to achieve great results. Thirsty Thursday is an event run by NTU with the University of Nottingham which provides a networking forum for students to develop this skill and makes some great contacts in the mean time!

You should really make the most of this opportunity as it is a valuable collaboration between the two universities which pools high profile and inspiring professionals.

Hope to see you on 21st at Oceania,

Love

Laura x
